The passing of the Hon. Mauril Bélanger

Posted on August 17, 2016

We wish to pay tribute to our late leader and great friend, the Honourable Mauril Bélanger, PC, M.P., who passed away on August 15, 2016.  Mauril tirelessly represented and advocated on behalf of the constituents of Ottawa-Vanier for over 20 years.  His influence extended to all of Canada as he fought to update and amend our national anthem and extend bilingual services in health care.  Internationally, his service as Co-President of the Canada-Africa Parliamentary Association improved the lives of countless numbers of less fortunate families.

His modesty was deeply ingrained and his passion for Canada knew no bounds. Mauril was a gentleman, a highly respected parliamentarian and a generous friend.  Above all, he was a devoted husband to Catherine and a father to her family whose pain we all share.

Mauril lived by a standard of service, creativity and hard work which will inspire us always.  Gandhi once said “Learn as if you are going to live forever. Live as if you are going to die tomorrow”.

Farewell, our treasured friend and leader.

In lieu of flowers, you are invited to support Mauril’s life work and contribute to the Mauril Bélanger Community Fund, c/o The Community Foundation of Ottawa or 75 Albert Street, Ste. 301, Ottawa, ON K1P 5E7.
